I’ve already done one post on Suspiria and the many references it makes to previous witchcraft and/or supernatural films, references I believe are intentional. What I failed to mention is that Suspiria is without a doubt one of the best horror films ever made, and should be required viewing for any serious fan of horror. Director Dario Argento creates an eerie, disquieting world in which every person seems threatening, every shadow is imbued with menace, and even bright colors somehow feel evil. A truly unique combination of kaleidoscope cinematography, startling imagery and one of the most evocative and effective soundtracks of any horror film, Suspiria is perfect viewing any time of year. If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it for this Halloween season.
